Background and summary

With a very brief introduction to the background of the universe at the start, the movie takes over where the series left off. The movie once again revolves around the adventure of the crew but really takes hold of the River plot which existed throughout the series.

The movie is good and fans hope to see more. The full review is below, underneath the posters, but be warned that it contains many spoilers. Enjoy!

Movie review

(The review below contains spoilers about the movie)

The movie gives a quick introduction to the firefly universe in a unique way. It provides a history through the eyes of River in one of her childhood school classes. This allows for people who haven't seen the series but still went to the movie to become quickly inducted.

Moving on to a robbery mission which the crew is involved in, the film quickly shows the action hilarity and dialogue which fans have come to expect. Suddenly though in the mist of the action Reavers attack and the crew barely escape with their lives.

Simon then argues with the Mal because River was brought on the mission and could've been killed. Simon even goes so far as to decide to take himself and River off the ship at the next port of call for the ship. At the port, the captain goes to haggle but River becomes the victim of the campaign to retrieve her as a secret word coded into a television advertisment set off a kung foo version of her in which she and Mal even face off until Simon triggers her with another code word.

The ship visits Mr. Universe who unviels the alliance advertisement plot.

Looking for somewhere safe, the ship goes to the Haven mining colony where Shepherd Book, who used to travel on Serenity, now lives. Then Mal is contacted by Inara looking to meet but he detects that she is acting strange and senses an Alliance trap. He goes to rescue her and thanks to their quick thinking, they escape an Alliance agent.

After another outburst by River, the crew learn of Miranda, a planet where an alliance experiment went wrong. They decide to travel there after they return to the Haven mining colony and find Shepherd Book barely alive and watch him die. When Serenity gets to Miranda, the crew discover the shocking truth which the Alliance has tried to cover up and hide. The experiment on Miranda created the Reavers and the crew find some video evidence which they decide to bring back to Mr. Universe so he can spread the word to the galaxy.

On their way back, they attract the attention of the Reavers which turns out to be a good thing as they end up with a fleet of Reavers ships who attack the fleet of Alliance ship who were waiting for them at Mr. Universes planet.

With the big space battle happening, Wash flys Serenity safely to the surface whilst being chased by a Reaver ship. It all seems to good when suddenly a Reaver harpoon rips through Wash's chest and he dies.

Pulling Zoe and the crew into Mr. Universes place only to find the alliance screwed it up and that their only chance, Mallies rushes to a backup Mr. Universes had hidden from the Alliance. All seems lost as the crew face up to many many Reavers and the captain fights the alliance agent. Then suddenly the captain wins whilst River simultaneuosly goes out an takes out an army of Reavers using a long blade and an axe. Hurrah for sense!

In the epilogue, Serenity is in a repair yard on the planet Persephone and it looks like the firefly class ship will fly again. As the film ends, Serenity is flying away when suddenly a chunk of the ship breaks from the back of the ship and the film ends with Mal shouting "What was that?".

This film is definitly what fans of the series would have come to expect and more. A barrel of laughs, swashbuckling and action all the way through combined with some very emotional sences make it definitly one to watch.
